Five generations and two roof types

The Santa Fe has undergone several mounting changes throughout its existence. The first two generations SM (2000 to 2006) and CM (2006 to 2012) use raised roof rails. The third generation DM (2012 to 2018) and the fourth TM (2018 to 2023) received flush roof rails. With the latest angular version MX5 introduced in 2023, the manufacturer returned to raised roof rails.

When determining the generation, orient yourself by the production year registered in the vehicle registration certificate. If you have a car from a transitional year between two generations, check the shape of the car and the way the roof rails are mounted.

You can tell the difference between roof rails at a glance

Raised roof rails stand above the roof level and there is free space along their entire length through which you can easily pass your hand. The foot of the rack firmly grips around such a rail from both the outside and the inside.

Flush roof rails form a single continuous unit with the bodywork and there is no gap between them and the roof sheet metal. The feet for this roof type fit into a specially profiled inner edge. The racks between these two systems are not interchangeable.

Large SUV and loading equipment

The Santa Fe offers a large roof surface that can easily accommodate a long ski roof box and a bicycle holder alongside it. The long wheelbase also ensures that the box will not interfere when the tailgate is fully opened.

When loading bicycles onto a tall SUV, expect that you will have to stand on the doorsill of an open door or take a small step. Also remember the total height of the car with loaded cargo before entering underground garages or covered parking structures.
