The fourth-generation RAV4, designated XA40, was produced from 2012 to 2018 and is the only generation of this model where the production year alone is not enough to select the right part. Some cars have raised roof rails, while others have a smooth roof, and each requires a different kit.

The XA40 succeeds the XA30, which was produced until 2012, so cars from the transition period need to be verified by their manufacturing date. The same applies to the upper end: after 2018, a newer generation with flush rails took over, and the kits from this page do not fit it. We do have systems for it, currently without a dedicated page, so feel free to message us in that case.
The RAV4 sits higher than an estate car, and you can feel it when loading a roof box, especially when lifting it by yourself. The box can be placed onto the crossbars from the side lengthwise and then slid into position, which is much easier than lifting it straight up overhead. The roof easily handles skis and luggage while leaving the boot free; for bicycles, consider whether you will enjoy lifting them onto the roof if this is a regular occurrence.
