The Ford Kuga is a popular family SUV, but with full occupancy, the trunk quickly reaches its limits. Roof crossbars will solve this problem, but before buying, you need to know the correct vehicle generation and the roof mounting type.
With the Kuga, the arrival of a new generation also changed the roof construction. Older models represented by Kuga MK1 (2008 to 2013) and Kuga 2008 – 2019 have raised rails. These stand high and there is a free gap between them and the roof itself, through which you can easily pass your hand.
The third generation designated as Kuga DFK, production of which started in 2019, brought a change. Instead of raised rails, it has flush rails. These closely follow the roof line, are attached to it along their entire length and there is no gap underneath them. The racks for these two systems are not mutually interchangeable.
When determining the generation, follow the year of manufacture in the vehicle registration certificate, not the date of first registration or the year you bought the car. Pay increased attention to cars manufactured in the milestone year of 2019. The safest way is to look directly at the roof of your vehicle. If you can feel free space under the rails, you belong to the 2008 – 2019 category. If the rails sit directly on the sheet metal with their entire surface, choose the newer DFK generation.
The Kuga provides enough stability even for a larger load on the roof, whether it is a roof box with skis or several bicycles next to each other. Because it is a higher car, when loading heavier items, it is useful to open the rear door and step on the body threshold. Always keep in mind that a car with a loaded box will increase significantly in height, which is important to watch especially when entering underground garages and car washes.
Before choosing specific accessories, check the allowed roof load in the vehicle manual, which includes the weight of the crossbars themselves, the box, and the transported load.
