When choosing a roof rack for BMW X1, the starting point is the generation code from the vehicle registration or the year of first registration. The first generation E84 (2009 to 2015) came with two different roof configurations. The second generation F48 (2015 to 2022) and the third generation U11 (from 2022 onwards) use flush rails. If your vehicle was manufactured around the turn of 2015 or 2022, check the exact month of manufacture when the generation change occurred.
Two mounting types come into consideration for this model. Flush rails sit directly on the roof along their entire length with no open gap underneath the profile. A naked roof has no features on it, and the rack is secured using a specific fit kit gripping under the door frame. With newer generations you will encounter almost exclusively flush rails, but with the older E84 version it is worth checking the roof visually before purchasing.
BMW X1 serves as a compact car for daily routes, but during a family trip to the mountains or in summer to the water, the trunk fills up quickly.
