Raised rails or flush roof tracks

The first-generation Touareg came with two different roof designs. Raised rails stand above the roof surface with a clear gap underneath, allowing you to easily slide your hand underneath them. The second variant is flush roof tracks, which are integrated directly into the vehicle's roof profile and mounting elements slide into them.

These two systems require different feet and are not interchangeable. Check your car from the side profile before choosing to ensure you select the correct mounting type.

Selecting crossbars based on the transported cargo

You can mount a roof box, bicycle racks, or ski holders on your Touareg's roof. Accessories are attached using clamps around the bar profile or via screws directly into the T-slot in the crossbar. Aluminum bars with a T-slot offer a quieter ride and allow you to utilize the full width of the roof. Steel bars with a classic square profile are a solid choice when frequently transporting building materials.

Before purchasing accessory racks, verify which mounting method your roof box or holder requires.

High body structure and driving with cargo

The Touareg is a large vehicle, so when loading items onto the roof, you will appreciate a step near the rear wheels or using the door sills. If you mount a roof box onto the crossbars, the total height of the car will increase. Keep this in mind before entering indoor garages, underground parking lots, or passing under low overpasses.

The maximum permissible roof load includes the weight of the cargo, the box itself, and the crossbars. Check the specific weight limit for your vehicle in your car's manual.
