The Touring is the estate version of the 3 Series, and its roof is useful for anyone carrying bikes, skis or traveling with a full car. However, the mounting system has changed twice over four generations, so the production year determines the correct choice. E46 and E91 models were supplied with or without roof rails, and after twenty years the equipment varies even within the same production year. If you do not see roof rails on the roof, the car uses fixed points hidden under caps near the door frame. The caps can be carefully flipped open to reveal the threads where the foot is screwed in. For these two generations, a single glance at the roof tells more than guessing by the year.
