The E39 Touring left the factory with two different roof configurations. Some vehicles feature raised roof rails that stand above the body profile, allowing you to comfortably slide your hand underneath along the entire length. Other cars rolled off the production line without them and feature prepared fixed points in the roof for screwing in the feet.

The year 2004 was transitional for the 5 Series estate. Production of the E39 generation was ending and the newer model 5 Series Touring E61 took over. The vehicle registration document often lists the first registration date, which may be later than the actual production year.
Check the generation of your vehicle before choosing. Feet from the newer model will not fit the E39 body.

If you already own a roof box or bicycle racks, pay attention to the profile shape of the selected crossbars to ensure your clamps or T-adapters fit them.
