The mounting method of crossbars for the BMW 5 Series Touring changed significantly over the years. The older E39 generation from 1997 to 2004 was produced with raised roof rails, or has fixed mounting points on the roof. The succeeding E61 generation from 2004 to 2010 relied on raised roof rails.
Starting from the F11 generation from 2010 to 2017, the Munich automaker switched to a more modern solution, which is flush roof rails. You will also find these on the G31 generation from the 2017 to 2024 period, and similarly on the newest G61 model with production starting in 2024. When choosing, always follow the production year from your vehicle registration document.

If your car has no roof rails and you own the E39 generation, mounting is done into prepared installation points, which are fixed points.
The long roof of the 5 Series estate is an excellent base for a family roof box, ski racks or several bicycle holders. Compared to tall SUV vehicles, loading bicycles onto the Touring is much more convenient because the roof remains at the natural arm height of an adult.
When installing a longer roof box, always check the opening range of the tailgate first. This will prevent a situation where the opened boot lid would hit the rear part of the box with its upper edge or spoiler. Always read the exact assembly of individual rack parts in the detail of the specific product.
Also keep in mind that the maximum permissible roof load, which can be found in the vehicle manual, includes the total weight of the load including the crossbars themselves and the mounted accessories.
