Throughout its history, the Honda HR-V has seen three generations with completely different roof designs. You can choose the correct crossbar setup based on the production year from your vehicle registration document and whether your car has roof rails or a bare roof.
The first generation HR-V GH (1999 to 2006) is an angular model from the turn of the millennium where the rack mounts onto a bare roof under the door frame.
The second generation HR-V RU (2015 to 2021) arrived as a modern urban crossover after a longer pause. From the factory, it could feature either a bare roof or flush rails that lie directly on the roof without any gap.
The third generation HR-V RV (from 2021) brought a hybrid powertrain and a new body style. It features either a bare roof or raised rails that stand up from the roof profile and allow you to slide your fingers underneath.
Always verify the car's production year in your registration document first. The production year is what matters, not the date of first registration or sale, which is especially important around the transition years of 2021 and 2022.
The second step is checking the roof itself. While the first-generation GH always had a bare roof, newer RU and RV models varied depending on the trim level. You can easily tell them apart by looking at the car: raised rails form an arch with free space underneath, flush rails form a continuous strip directly on the roof edge, and a bare roof has a completely clean surface.
The Honda HR-V has a well-thought-out interior, but during a family trip or a mountain getaway, the trunk quickly reaches its limits. Mounting a roof box frees up space for passengers and makes it possible to transport skis, a stroller, and bulky bags.
In the summer season, you will appreciate bicycle racks. The HR-V roof is not overly high, so you can load a bike without having to stand on the door sill. If you place a roof box on top, keep in mind the change in clearance height before entering underground garages or hotel parking structures.
