Octavia Combi can haul a lot even without the roof, but summer arrives, bikes and a stroller join the bags, and space runs out faster than one would expect. Crossbars and a roof box or carriers on top will solve this in one afternoon. Select the generation by production year and the selection will narrow down to kits for your roof.
The periods overlap in transition years because the older and newer generations were produced in parallel for a time. If your car is from such a year, follow the production date from your vehicle registration document.
For generations 1U to 5E, the rail stands above the roof and the foot clamps it from above and below. With NX, the rail lies flush against the roof and the foot anchors into points hidden directly inside it. These are two distinct systems, so the older kit cannot be saved even by ordering a different foot. You simply cannot transfer crossbars from 5E to the new Octavia.
On a wagon, a roof box is almost always a better choice than an open basket. Two weeks' worth of luggage goes up top, leaving room in the trunk for things you want to keep handy along the way. During installation, position the box on the crossbars so the tailgate does not hit it when opened; with longer boxes pushed too far back, this is the most common reason for scratched tailgates. Bikes are easy to load on an Octavia, as the wagon roof is not high.
