The first generation designated as Touareg 7L (2002 to 2010) used two distinct systems: raised rails or T-tracks in the roof. The third generation Touareg CR (from 2018 onwards) switched to modern flush rails, which require a completely different foot pack design. When selecting, check the manufacturing year in your vehicle registration and the shape of your roof. Each of these solutions requires a different mounting method, so crossbars are not interchangeable between different generations.
Raised rails are easily identified by standing elevated above the roof profile, allowing you to easily slip your hand underneath their entire length. The rack foot grips them from both the outside and the inside during installation.
Flush rails, on the other hand, sit directly flush against the roof along their entire bottom edge with no gap underneath. The rack clamp grips a special groove on their inner or outer edge. T-tracks in the roof feature recessed tracks built directly into the metal roof panel, into which specific mounting adapters are slid.
The Touareg is a tall and robust vehicle, which is great for off-roading, but requires a bit of agility when handling cargo on the roof. Opening a door and stepping onto the door sill will help you when securing bikes or unloading luggage from a roof box.
Do not forget about the change in overall clearance height. After installing a roof box or bike racks, the vehicle height increases significantly, which must be monitored especially before entering underground garages, parking structures, or driving under low-hanging tree branches.
