S40, S60 and S90 sedans have a bare roof and the rack anchors under the door frame. Wagons and SUVs sit on roof rails, but of two different types. Older V50, V70 and XC70 have raised rails with a gap underneath them, while newer V60, V90, XC40, XC60 and XC90 switched to flush rails that lie directly on the roof. Cross Country versions are listed separately because their mounting may differ from standard wagons.
With raised rails, the foot clamps around the profile and tolerates minor size differences. Flush rails work differently: the foot fits into points hidden directly inside the rail, and their spacing varies between models and generations. Therefore, a setup from one Volvo almost never transfers to another, even if the roof looks the same. Model and production year are decisive.

Volvos get loaded properly, which is why it pays off to choose crossbars together with what will go on them. A roof box mounts onto the crossbar profile and not every clamp fits every shape; if you already have a box, check it first. With V-series wagons, also keep in mind how far back you slide the box so that the tailgate doesn't hit it when opened.
